Official Statement

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Alai Al Naqbi, Director of the Traffic and Patrol Department, said that jumping the red signal is one of the most dangerous traffic violations that can often result in road deaths and serious injuries. He said that when a vehicle jumps the red signal, the risk of a serious collision with oncoming vehicles from other direction increases considerably.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Alai Al Naqbi added that motorists have repeatedly committed red signal violations despite being warned multiple times. He said that it is important for motorists to understand that authorities have taken a tougher stance against repeat offenders and they will have to face hefty penalties for jumping the red signal. He also appreciated the efforts of Sharjah Police and other concerned authorities who have launched several awareness campaigns to build an understanding about the risks of jumping the red signal amongst motorists.

Penalties for Jumping the Red Signal

Motorists have to face hefty penalties for jumping the red signal on Sharjah roads. The penalties for jumping the red signal include a fine of AED 1,000, 12 black points issued against the driving license of the offender and impoundment of the vehicle for 30 days. Repeating this dangerous violation can potentially result in the suspension of the driving license. It is important for motorists to be aware of the fact that their driving license will be suspended and they will not be allowed to drive at all if the black points against their license amount to 24.

Jumping the red signal is amongst the most dangerous traffic violations that have caused the most number of road deaths in Sharjah during last few years. The penalties for this violation are also amongst the harshest of penalties that motorists can face for committing a traffic violation in Sharjah. Motorists should avoid this dangerous traffic violation at all costs to prevent themselves and others from dangerous road situations that can often have fatal consequences.

Bottom-line

Traffic authorities have identified that most of the red signal violations have been committed by over-speeding motorists during 2018 so far. Motorists often try to rush their vehicles near junctions to cross before the traffic signal turns red and this reckless driving behavior of motorists can prove to have extremely dangerous consequences in heavy traffic.

Avoiding red signal violations requires a change in mindset from motorists. Allowing oneself a small buffer of few minutes to reach any destination is a useful practice that motorists can follow for avoiding over-speeding, which can often lead to jumping the red signal. Adopting a defensive driving approach and respecting traffic rules is important not just to avoid hefty traffic penalties, but also dangerous road situations that can often result in road deaths or serious injuries.
