Ten brand new cameras have been set up to traffic lights in the Capital Emirate of Abu Dhabi. In framework of the capital plans and strategies that increased the number of equipped junctions to thirty six.
Brigadier General Hussein Al Harthi, the Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, pointed out that the devices used state of the art infrared, no flash technology to capture offences.
The three definition (3-D) cameras are thermal and cover more than five lanes in each direction, scanning and checking the licence plates of all passing vehicles.
These cameras can also identify the number and classification of vehicles and the average speed, as well as acknowledge the number and direction of pedestrians crossing at red and green lights.
The cameras are part of the traffic department’s monitoring system project, which set out last year with cameras at more than 150 junctions in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region.
Offences and law violations included running red lights, wrongful use of lanes, vehicles trespassing over pedestrian lines, excessive speed and making turns or U-turns from unspecified lanes.
Therefore, Brig Gen Al Harithi called on motorists to observe traffic rules and avoid obstructing traffic flow at junctions.
Mr Al Harithi said the state of the art or the advanced traffic monitoring system provided the means for the ongoing assessment of junctions and the way they affect road safety.
The system is directly attached to a text messaging system that alerts and warns motorists and road users about road conditions and the rules they should abide by.

Just a warning for all visitors who choose to drive during your stay in Abu Dhabi regarding speed cameras.
Firstly, the speed float whereby for example, in a 60 km/hr limit you could actually go up to 70 km/hr has virtually been done away with, and the cameras will zap you at anything over the speed limit.
Secondly, the square box type cameras that just monitor the fast lane are being replaced with smart cameras that monitor all the lanes at the same time.
Thirdly (as I found out to my peril) the speed cameras in Sheik Zayed Tunnel are now in operation.
Fourthly, the car hire companies have an arrangement with the police traffic department whereby a speeding violation is immediately reported to them and they will charge you for it. However, because the rental companies immediately pay the fine on your behalf you actually only pay 50%.
Lastly, if you are staying on Yas Island with a car, beware that the traffic lights have a camera synced to the red light. Jumping a red light on Yas is an expensive way to get to Ikea.
